Muslim Boys United (MBU)

Mentoring young believers.
To supplicate. To serve. To strive.

ABOUT
MBU is a year-long hybrid (online and in-person) mentorship programme that offers weekly educational support to a cohort of Year-7 Muslim boys from London.

Our programme aims to support these young boys as they navigate the journey from boyhood to manhood during their secondary school years.

What is MBU?

Muslim Boys United (MBU) is a year-long hybrid (online and in-person) mentorship programme for a cohort of Year-7 Muslim boys from London.

The programme aims to foster the character and overall educational development of our students as they progress from boyhood to manhood during their secondary school years.

How will MBU work in practice?

The MBU programme will consist of 40 sessions across the year. The programme will be delivered primarily online over zoom, Sunday's 5-6pm, from Sep 2024 to Aug 2025.

MBU is built upon a curriculum that covers four key thematic areas of education (PAGE): Purpose, Awareness, Good Grades, Emotional Intelligence.

  • Purpose - The first theme (Sep 2024 - Nov 2024) is focused on helping students think about and reflect on their purpose in life as young believers.
  • Awareness - The second theme (Dec 2024 - Feb 2025) is dedicated to increasing our students awareness about the variety of productive careers/pathways open to them once they leave school.
  • Good Grades - The third theme (Mar 2025 - Jun 2025) is designed to support students with their academic development - by sharing effective revision tools and frameworks.
  • Emotional Intelligence - The fourth theme (Jun 2025 - Aug 2025) aims to inspire students to examine and reflect upon the emotional intelligence (EQ) demonstrated by the prophets of God in the Holy Quran.

Why does MBU exist?

  • Information gap - Many young muslim boys across Britain are struggling to access a holistic educational curriculum that supports both their academic and character development as they progress towards manhood.
  • Institution gap - Muslim boys in this day and age, typically, do not undertake a formal process of initiation from boyhood to manhood - as was the case in traditional pre-modern societies. As a result, they have fewer opportunities to benefit from focused mentorship.
  • Social consequences - The lack of holistic educational curriculums and positive male mentors for young Muslim boys has detrimental effects on the quality and sustainability of family and community institutions, essential for society's success.

Who will be delivering the MBU mentorship programme?

The MBU programme will be delivered by Mr Sulaiman Iqbal. An individual committed to supporting young people to achieve their full potential and live God-centred lives.

Mr Sulaiman Iqbal honed his academic skills during his time at institutions such as Cambridge, LSE, and Law School (BPP & ULaw). With a love for coaching young people, he brings practical experience in facilitating reflective discussions.

As the Founder of Team UPside, an award-winning educational charity, he spent four years supporting students in the Ealing, West London community and as a result was honoured with the Diana Award in 2022.

Furthermore, his personal background growing up in a fatherless household has instilled in him empathy and a genuine commitment to serve young people from underserved backgrounds to achieve their full potential.

The MBU programme represents a culmination of Sulaiman's years worth of lived experience and community service.

He stands ready to support a cohort of Year-7 Muslim boys from London as they embark on their journey from boyhood to manhood during their secondary school years.

What students should apply to MBU programme?

The MBU programme welcomes applications from eligible students who meet specific criteria.

Suitable candidates for the programme are Muslim boys who will be commencing Year 7 in September 2024 and are based in London.

Students living in single-parent households, receiving Free School Meals, and attending state schools are considered high-priority applicants.

Unfortunately, the programme currently cannot accommodate students with learning/mental-health difficulties due to capacity and experience constraints.

Applicants who meet the entry criteria will be invited to a short interview, where their commitment levels will be assessed.

Due to limited spaces, we encourage eligible students to apply early.

How much does the MBU programme cost?

The MBU programme fee is £20 per month.

This fee allows us to generate revenue that will be directly invested back into the programme. By doing so, we can continuously improve the quality of resources and provide enriching opportunities for our students.

Our commitment is to create a nurturing and transformative learning environment for all students, and the revenue from the programme plays a crucial role in making this vision a reality.

Financial assistance is available for families who cannot afford the £20 per month fee.
